• 1.0 out of 5 stars from S3lD0M -- Terrible writing. : Can't really say how the book as a whole was, because I stopped reading after the tenth instance of the word "retarded." I can maybe accept once or twice, if it really adds something specific that just couldn't be conveyed with an alternative word choice, but it's just lazy and juvenile to lean so heavily on such an outdated and ugly word. This isn't the only questionable language, but it did reoccur with such frequency I had to start wondering what might be motivating the writer's obsession. After hearing about the film and wanting to read the book first, I may have built it up too high in my mind, because I was actually a little let-down by the end of this, which was a slog to get through. • 1.0 out of 5 stars from name -- Read the book. Do not listen to the audiobook : The book is amazing but the audio version is absolute garbage. The narrator is one of the worst I have heard and they could not have chosen a worse person for this particular book. He speaks way too fast and his cadence just seems unnatural. He speeds through parts of some sentences and then speaks too slowly in others. He also has no pause between different characters speaking so it seems like back and forth conversations flow together into one long sentence. It is definitely one of those books that gets you thinking, and in that thinking, horrors emerge from your psyche. No matter how bizarre the events the characters witness... nothing compares to how your mind takes those descriptions and manifests them... the feeling you get in your gut... DELICIOUS! I can understand why it has a cult following, much like South Park or something about more off key, like J and Silent Bob. I think it carries a type of humour that you just need to “get”. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Eoin O' Reilly -- Good Horror, Decent Fiction, So-so Comedy : It's probably my own fault but I can't help but feel a little underwhelmed with John Dies at the End. In certain circles at least, it's regarded as the perfect marriage of horror and comedy and I was mostly left a little disappointed with the humour. That said, the horror is quite effective in many cases and Wong injects a good deal of tension into several scenes. It's best to temper your expectations with this one. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Braythor -- This is not a bad book, but it's not great either : This is not a bad book, but it's not great either. It starts off brilliantly, with great prose weaving in and out of comedy and horror; one moment it can be incredibly witty, making you laugh for a good while, then it will switch entirely to something so dark you almost don't want to continue. The underlying story is insane, but seems to make sense...just about...at first. But then, around the middle of the book, this superb writing gives way to an obvious desire to just see how stupid it can get. It's a real shame, but the author loses control of his writing and it becomes very apparent as the end draws near that he barely understands what he's created, and is really struggling to hold it all together. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Man V Film -- It's a real trip : Written in a self knowing style John dies at the end is one of the most ludicrous stories i've ever red. Brilliant, hilariously funny. David and john are two of the most likeable and fun protagonists I've met in the longest while. The story zips along with some of the strangest story beats i've ever encountered.
